Bomb Squad Called After DPW Worker Finds Wwii-era Mortar In Westchester

A bomb squad was called after a public works employee discovered a World War II-era mortar in his relative's belongings in Westchester, authorities said.

The incident began on Monday, April 29, at around 11 a.m., when a Yonkers Department of Public Works employee contacted the city's police department and told them he had a mortar in his car, parked at the DPW Service Center at 1130 Nepperhan Ave.

According to Yonkers Police Lieutenant Jamie Dumser, the employee had discovered the mortar while cleaning out a relative's belongings. He then brought it to the service center to find out how to properly dispose of it.

As a precautionary measure, the Yonkers Police bomb squad was called in and was able to determine that the mortar was "de-commissioned and completely inert," according to Dumser.

The device was then given to the Westchester County Bomb Squad so they could properly dispose of it.

Dumser said there was no threat to the DPW Center or the public at any time.
